Gemstones Descriptions

These are most of the gemstones that we use. Prices given include the cost of bezel setting the stone in sterling silver and, unless otherwise noted, assumes the stone to be 4 to 6 mm in diameter, round, cabachon or faceted . Larger stones cost more and there is a small additional charge for prong setting or 14 karat gold settings of any type. Amber

Not really a stone, but the hardened resin of the pine tree, amber has become quite common and inexpensive since the fall of the Soviet Empire and the increase in trade in Baltic amber. Translucent. 2 to 2 1/2 on the Mohs scale. Magickally, amber is associated with Venus, Leo, the Sun, Tifareth, and the Manipura or Solar Plexus Chakra. Amber promotes clear thinking and protects the wearer against rheumatism, toothaches, headaches and a number of other ailments. Cabachon only.

Amethyst

A form of quartz and actually the same stone as citrine. Translucent. 7 on the Mohs scale. Magickally, amethyst is associated with Jupiter, Pisces or Aquarius, the Sun, Yesod, and the Shasrara or Crown Chakra. Amethyst is February's birthstone. Amethyst protects the wearer against drunkenness and poison, promotes pleasant dreams, improves memory, and encourages gentleness and amiability. Aquamarine

A palish blue variety of beryl, a silicate of beryllium and aluminum. Translucent. 7 1/2 to 8 on the Mohs scale. It is usually heat treated to increase the intensity of color. In magick it is associated with the Visuddha or Throat Chakra, Chesed, and Scorpio. It is a sailor's talisman. Price varies due to origin, size and quality. Call or email us.

Black Onyx

Usually a form of dyed agate this stone is also a form of chalcedony. Opaque. 6 1/2 to 7 on the Mohs scale. In magick, black onyx is sacred to Kali and associated with the Dark Side of the Goddess or the Moon, Capricorn, Malkuth, and the Muladhara or Root Chakra. The meanings of the stone are sophisticated and refer to magical practices that deal with the hidden or unconscious elements of the psyche. Cabachon only.

Blue Topaz

Topaz is a silicate of aluminum containing fluorite and hydroxyl. It is found in a variety of colors although smoky brown blue is the most popular. The stone is often treated to increase the intensity of color. Translucent. 8 on the Mohs scale. In magick, blue topaz is associated with Sagittarius (or Scorpio if yellow topaz), Chesed, and the Visuddha or Throat Chakra or the Svadishthana or Spleen Chakra. Carnelian

Carnelian is a red chalcedony, popular with the ancient Egyptians , Native Americans and in Indian and Tibetan Jewelry. Found in brown and white layers it is called sardonyx. Opaque. 6 1/2 to 7 on the Mohs scale. In magick, carnelian is sacred to the Mother aspect of the Goddess and associated with Virgo, Hod, and the Svadishthana or Spleen Chakra. It is a protective stone. Cabachon only.

Citrine

Generally a heat treated form of amethyst but sometimes found naturally. Found in brown and white layers it is called sardonyx. Translucent. 7 on the Mohs scale. In magick, citrine is sacred to the Sun and Solar Gods and is November's birthstone. It is also attributed to Tifareth, and the Manipura or Solar Plexus Chakra Cabachon and faceted available. $10: cabachon or faceted (4,5,6 mm)

Emerald

A form of beryl, a silicate of beryllium and aluminum. Translucent. 7 1/2 to 8 on the Mohs Scale. We buy high quality and reasonably priced emeralds from Brazil. Magically emerald is linked to the Earth Goddess and to Spring, Netzach, the Anahata or Heart Chakra, and associated with Venus and Cancer. Emerald is May's Birthstone. The stone is said to ease the pains of childbirth. Available faceted or as cabachon. Price varies considerably, depending on size and quality. Call or email us.

Garnet

Confused historically with rubies, garnets are a silicate of iron, magnesium and aluminum. Translucent. 7 to 7 1/2 on the Mohs scale. In magick, citrine is sacred to the Mother aspect of the Goddess and is January's birthstone. It is also attributed to Mars, Aquarius, Geburah, and the Muladhara or Root Chakra. Garnet is a protective stone, particularly against wounds and skin diseases and a love stone assuring faithfulness. Hematite

Iron Oxide. Opaque. 6 1/2 on the Mohs scale. In magick, hematite is sacred is sacred to Kali and associated with the Dark Side of the Goddess or the Moon. It is also attributed to the Earth or Gaia, Chokmah, and the Muladhara or Root Chakra. Similar in magickal meanings to black onyx, hematite also refers to hidden or dark magickal processes. Iolite

A silicate of magnesium and aluminum this translucent violet stone is also known as cordierite and dichroite. Translucent. 7 to 7 1/2 on the Mohs scale. In magick, iolite is associated with Mercury, Sagittarius, Virgo or Aquarius, Chesed, and the Visuddha or Throat Chakra or the Svadishthana or Spleen Chakra. Available faceted or as cabachons. $10 for 4mm or 5 mm cabachons, $15 for 6 mm cab.

Jade

A silicate of sodium and aluminum. The variety we prefer is an apple green form known as Jadeite, as opposed to the darker green Nephrite Jade, which is also available. Opaque. 6 to 6 1/2 on the Mohs scale. In magick, jade is associated with Venus, Pisces, Netzach , and the Anahata or Heart Chakra. Jade is a protective stone. Lapis Lazuli

Strictly a rock composed of lazurite, calcite, pyrite, and other minerals. Often threaded with gold colored specks. This stone was very popular in Ancient Egypt and remains so among Native Americans, in Middle Eastern, Indian, and Tibetan Jewelry. Opaque. 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale. In magick, lapis is associated with Mercury, Sagittarius, Virgo or Aquarius, Chesed, and the Visuddha or Throat Chakra or the Svadishthana or Spleen Chakra. It is December's birthstone. A symbol of Truth. Cabachon only. $10
